An Compassion of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she responded: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. Moreover, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
