Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
