The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
